Auricular
Conceptual typeface, 2007
The intent of Auricular was to explore communication as if vision was obsolete. I explored different ways people could use sound to navigate a space and based my typeface off that. I began with many video tests of how a person could “see” sound based on what they would be seeing around them.
After I finished creating a system of sounds that could dictate how a person could move through a space, I then created my forms based on aerial shots of myself using the system of sound navigation to move through a space.
Lastly, I assigned references to display the “sound type” visually based on my footsteps and also based on where my head was when each sound rang out.
Auricular won a University and College Designers Association Gold Award in the Electronic Media Division in the fall of 2007 as well as Best of Show: Student at the Detroit AIGA Design Re:View in 2009.
